About
Josephine McProud
Josephine Lyttle McProud is the owner and principle of McProud and Associates. A fourth generation native of California, Jo was raised in Southern California and developed an early interest in horticulture and art. Landscape architecture became the perfect fit for her passions. She graduated with honors in 1979 from the University of California at Davis with a major in Landscape Architecture, where she was a member of Sigma Lambda Alpha Honor Society for Landscape Architects and was the recipient of American Society of Landscape Architects’ Certificate of Honor for excellence in Landscape Architecture and professional promise.
Jo moved to Nevada City in 1980 to raise her family and begin her practice in landscape architecture. She received her California Landscape Architects license in 1983 and established McProud and Associates at that time. Her broad experience in landscape architecture has involved a large portfolio of successful projects throughout California, with a focus in the Central Valley, the Sierra Foothills and the high-elevation areas of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
As a “people person”, Jo welcomes the opportunity for the interactions and relationships fostered in a collaborative design process. As a designer, she loves the challenge of creating beauty in landscape spaces that are also functional and environmentally sustainable. Jo currently lives with her husband, Alan Haight, on their family farm, Riverhill Farm.
Kristy Rotermund
Kristy, born and raised in California, has lived in Nevada City since 2003 where she has worked with McProud and Associates as an AutoCAD drafting technician and landscape designer. Before entering the landscape profession, Kristy graduated with honors from the University of California at Los Angeles with a degree in Anthropology. With this degree she worked as an archaeologist for 12 years. While working in all the diverse habitats of California, Kristy developed a special appreciation for California native plants which she feels should play an important part in landscaping. She entered the landscape profession while living in Santa Barbara where she earned an Associate Degree in Environmental Horticulture. Her first landscape job was as a Staff Horticulturalist at the Lotusland Foundation, an educational non-profit 37 acre botanical display garden, maintained using sustainable landscaping methods. This experience helped her to become familiar with and a passionate advocate of environmentally sustainable landscape practices. She then worked for a landscape architecture firm as an AutoCAD drafting technician, landscape designer, and eventually a project manager. She believes strongly in sustainable and water-efficient landscaping practices.
At her home, Kristy, along with her husband Bruno, has worked hard to restore balance to her small piece of native foothill environment while enhancing its natural beauty with an ornamental and edible landscape, including a small orchard and vegetable garden.
